4 Training Drills to Make You a Better Midfielder

4 Training Drills to Make You a Better Midfielder

A midfielder in football is incredibly important, as they're the border between the attack and the defense, forcing them to glue the two together. The midfield of the game controls its tempo, wether the midfielders are told to press up the pitch increasing the speed of the game, or the sit back on a low block to slow the game down. Regardless, the responsibility of a midfielder is so important, as it requires the most athleticism and football IQ.

1. Wall-Passing & Turning

How to do it:
  1. Find a wall and continuously pass the ball back and forth.
  2. After getting comfortable, use either another object or a small goal-net and place it behind your wall.
  3. After receiving a pass from the wall turn either to the left or right and pass it into the other object or small goal-net.
  4. Be flexible and turn both ways in order to get used to it.
This training drill helps you train your ability to turn properly and teaches you the fundamentals of a midfielder in a real game. Knowing how to turn properly as a midfielder allows you to access acres of space, which you can then use to exploit, penetrating the opposition's system. Allowing for the best goalscoring chance.

2. Ball Mastery + Scanning

How to do it:
  1. Place for cones in a shape of a small square.
  2. Dribble around that small square using outside of your foot, sole rolls, and small touches.
  3. Do this while constantly scanning your surrounds by looking up.
This training drill helps you enhance your close ball control and trains your ball mastery. Almost as if you're having a relationship with the ball. Furthermore, it helps you build the ability to scan the pitch, forcing your brain to look after surroundings and figuring the best decision in less than a millisecond.

3. Long-Range Passing Accuracy

How to do it:
  1. Place two small target goals 3 feet a part of at least 30 yards or more.
  2. Practicing hitting low driven passes and long balls into these goals.
  3. Once comfortable, practice dribbling first, then pass into these goals.
The goal of this training drill is to help players practice their long-range passing and scanning. This is because the role of midfielders is to constantly switch up the play. It allows you to transition quickly from defense to attack. Allowing more space to be exploited.

4. 5 players Rondo

How do it:
  1. Place four cones to make a big square.
  2. Place 4 people on those cones.
  3. The last one is supposed to stay in the middle and try to intercept the pass from the players.
  4. Once intercepted, the last one who passed it must take the role of trying the intercept the pass.
This training drill exercises mental quickness and ball control in tight spaces, reflecting a real game scenario where you're being pressed and forced to make a quick decision to release the ball while still keeping possession.

Being a great midfielder isn’t about fancy skills, it’s about control, awareness, and decision-making. These drills help you become more comfortable on the ball, improve how you scan the pitch, and make better choices under pressure. If you train these consistently, you’ll start to control the tempo of the game, connect defense to attack more smoothly, and influence matches without needing to overcomplicate things. Master the basics, repeat them daily, and your impact as a midfielder will grow naturally.
