 Fundamentals of Football

Football online content you see may seem like you must know how to do the most complex skills that bait and beat defenders, such as the rainbow flick, hocus pocus, la croqueta, or any other professional skill. But in reality, the real key into being a great player is the basics of football, from being calm and composed while passing, and while using the simplest method that always guarantee's to beat the opposition's defenders.

1. Passing

Look at Sergio Busquets. When you watch him, he glides away from his opponent with ease, how, you may ask, because he's mastered the art of passing. This word may seem like a normal play style in football. But its actually what defines a great player. Passing is super important as it decides if you lose possession or make a key pass. Furthermore, you have got to be incredibly calm and stress-free.

Drills to improve passing:

  • 5v5 Rondo (If you're not alone) - This drill allows to visualize players from the opposition press you. It allows you to get into in-game experience and practice your passing. Your ability to get out of tight pressing can make you a good example for coaches if you want to go pro in the future.
  • Wall Passing: Wall pass control

    How to do it:

    1. Stand 2 - 3 meters from the wall.
    2. Pass the ball firmly against the wall and control it using your first touch, then pass again.
    3. Use both your left foot and your right foot for controlling and passing.
    4. Focus on quick clean touches.
    5. Try to complete 50 consecutive passes without losing control. Increase the speed as you improve. Frequency: 10 minutes daily.
    6. Being able to take easy touches with pure calmness also allows you to play like an unpressable player

1. Dribbling

Dribbling is what gives players their creativity and style. It’s the ability to move with the ball while maintaining balance, speed, and awareness — a mix of physics, coordination, and instinct.

 The Technique

Every good dribble starts with close control.
Use the inside and outside of both feet to gently tap the ball while keeping it within one step’s reach.

Core techniques include:

  • Basic Control Dribble: Keep the ball close while moving at a steady pace.

  • Body Feints: Use shoulder drops or quick movements to trick defenders.

  • Change of Pace: Slow down, then accelerate to burst past an opponent.

  • Shielding: Use your body to protect the ball from defenders.

Passing and dribbling may look simple, but they’re the foundation of every successful player.
When mastered, they become second nature — allowing you to play faster, smarter, and more creatively.
